Ma come funziona esattamente? In pratica è un composto gelatinoso che va inserito attraverso uno spugnetta e che va applicato due o tre giorni prima di un rapporto sessuale e si attiva solo al momento dell’inseminazione andando ad agire sugli spermatozoi.
Ad essere particolarmente innovativo però è il suo funzionamento: in realtà il composto gelatinoso non uccide gli spermatozoi, ma distrugge le sostanze che consentono il movimento degli spermatozoi verso l’ovulo da fecondare. Secondo John Aitken, biologo della riproduzione umana dell’Università di Newcastle, il nuovo contraccettivo è particolarmente sicuro per le donne, non ha effetti tossici o effetti collaterali di alcun genere.
Inoltre rappresenterebbe una vera rivoluzione nella contraccezione dall’introduzione della pillola (era il 1959) adeguandosi alle nuove esigenze della società e all’impennata delle malattie sessualmente trasmesse come ha sottolineato il dottor Aitken: il nuovo composto in gel infatti sarebbe il primo contraccettivo ad azione locale (rispetto al classico spermicida) che può essere applicato anche per poter prevenire le malattie sessualmente trasmesse.
Ci vorrà però del tempo prima che il nuovo contraccettivo possa essere effettivamente messo in commercio: per il momento il gel è stato sperimentato con successo solo in provetta, ma presto dovrebbero seguire le sperimentazioni sui topi e poi sulle donne.
