La sindrome di Gilbert deve il suo nome al suo scopritore, il gastroenterologo Augustin Nicolas Gilbert che all’inizio del secolo scorso trattò per la prima volta la la malattia in letteratura medica.
La sindrome di Gilbert è una malattia genetica molto rara che ha un’incidenza sulla popolazione mondiale del 7 massimo 8 per cento ed è una patologia che colpisce il fegato.
La malattia si presenta principalmente con un’accentuanta iperbilirubinemia nei primi dieci anni di vita e questo comporta che i livelli di bilirubina che normalmente risultano essere di poco sopra la norma, possono alzarsi momentaneamente in condizioni particolari come il digiuno, il semidigiuno, l’ingestione di alcol, lo stress, la febbre, diverse infezioni a carico di tutto l’organismo oppure soltanto per l’aumento dell’attività fisica.
Di solito la bilirubina tende ad accumularsi nel tessuto nervoso, dove le cellule lipidiche si trovano in maggiore quantità, ma se la quantità è elevata, questo può determinare una parziale degenerazione delle cellule nervose e quindi gravi danni intellettivi.
In più nelle persone che soffrono della sindrome di Gilbert anche l’insulina presenta livelli più alti nel sangue e questo provoca una mancanza di nutrimento per le cellule nervose, portando così il paziente ad una depressione del tono neuro-umorale.
