Esistono terapie alternative o complementari contro il tumore al seno? Quando si ha il cancro spesso si ha più paura della chemioterapia che della malattia. Giustamente, perché alcuni farmaci utilizzati in tal caso possono avere pesantissimi effetti collaterali. Ma la chemio può anche salvare la vita. E’ una questione di scelta personale. Resta il fatto che in tali contesti spesso si è bombardati di informazioni da parenti ed amici che riferiscono di cure miracolose e naturali che possono aiutare senza effetti collaterali: vitamine, erbe,  diete speciali, o altri metodi come agopuntura o massaggio, per citarne alcuni. Di fatto alcuni di questi rimedi possono essere effficaci ad alleviare i sintomi sia del tumore che delle terapie farmacologiche che si fanno. L’importante è capire bene di cosa si parla, a cosa servono e cosa aspettarsi.

Terapie complementari

Le terapie complementari sono quelle che si usano abitualmente in supporto ai trattamenti medici.La maggior parte di queste non vengono offerti come cura cntro il tumore al seno, bensì come ausilio per sentirsi meglio, per alleviare il dolore (agopuntura), la nausea (il thé alla menta ed altre erbe), o ridurre lo stress (meditazione). L’importante è che sia sempre l’oncologo a suggerire il corretto supporto (che varia a seconda dei casi): alcuni “rimedi naturali” possono risultare infatti anche dannosi. Può essere considerata tale anche a fisioterapia che si fa dopo la chirurgia al seno, laddove ci siano difficoltà nel muovere il braccio.

 

Terapie alternative

La medicina alternativa al contrario si pone come trattamento al posto delle cure mediche convenzionali (appunto, alternativa). Il più delle volte i trattamenti alternativi vengono offerti direttamente come cure anticancro. Non ci sono prove scientifiche che ne garantiscano efficacia e sicurezza. Il più grande rischio è comunque quello di abbandonare la possibilità di essere curato con un trattamento medico standard. Ritardi o interruzioni nei trattamenti medici possono dare al cancro più tempo per crescere e rendere meno efficace la terapia.

 

La scelta

E’ facile intuire come e perché le persone affette da cancro cerchino metodi alternativi. Si vuole fare tutto il possibile per combattere la malattia e l’idea di un trattamento con pochi o nessun effetto indesiderato cattura certamente l’attenzione. A volte i trattamenti medici come la chemioterapia possono essere difficili da accettare, ma la maggior parte di questi metodi alternativi non sono stati testati e non è stata dimostrata alcuna efficacia nel trattamento del cancro.

Resta il fatto che mentre alcune sostanze come abbiamo detto possono essere utili come coadiuvanti, bisogna sempre rivolgersi a professionisti, al proprio oncologo di riferimento, perché la frode è sempre un rischio altrimenti. Come riconoscerla? Con la logica: la promessa di una cura che funziona su tutte le forme di cancro  non ha basi possibili ad esempio. Se invece si vuole andare all’estero per provare qualche terapia in più o diversa, è meglio assicurarsi prima del luogo e della terapia che si va a testare, chiedendo al proprio oncologo di riferimento. La scelta della cura è e deve essere del paziente.
