Le cause di tale disturbo possono essere molteplici, ed i fattori che maggiormente concorrono ad infezioni passeggere o croniche degli organi interni dell’orecchio sono da ricercarsi per esempio in seguito ad una parotite particolarmente grave, oppure per l’infiammazione delle vie respiratorie, o ancora ad un herpes.
I sintomi più comuni della labirintite sono l’alterazione della capacità del nostro corpo di trovare il senso dell’equilibrio, il che provoca sensazioni di malessere generale che possono sfociare in nausee e vomito.
Sintomi evidenti della labirintite sono l’ipoacusia, ovvero una riduzione drastica dell’udito, oppure la presenza costante di fischi e ronzii nell’orecchio (tinnitus).
Comuni possono essere anche febbre e dolori ed il fenomeno del nistagmo, l’oscillazione involontaria dei globi oculari.
Nel caso della labirintite purulenta i sintomi sono analoghi ma l’infiammazione può portare ad una lesione irreversibile degli organi interni dell’orecchio che può provocare anche la sordità totale.
Anche la labirintite cronica esprime gli stessi sintomi, attraverso periodiche crisi di vertigine, generalmente di più lieve intensità, cui possono far seguito, anche in questo caso, vomito e forte senso di nausea. Ed anche nel caso della labirintite cronica si può assistere ad una progressiva riduzione delle facoltà uditive.
Tali attacchi di vertigine e di nausea naturalmente impediscono lo svolgimento delle normali attività: ed anche nei casi in cui l’attacco sia più lieve occorre evitare attività come guidare, leggere, o eseguire movimenti veloci e repentini che possono incrementare le vertigini e di conseguenza il malessere che esse provocano.
