E’ la stessa Unicef a stilare una lista dei motivi per cui lavarsi le mani è importante. Primo motivo: questo gesto è la misura più efficace e meno costosa per prevenire la polmonite, malattia che ogni anni colpisce, e nei casi più gravi uccide, adulti e bambini. Inoltre lavarsi le mani con il sapone può ridurre di oltre il 40% la mortalità per diarrea. Terzo motivo per lavarsi le mani con una certa costanza: così facendo si riduce il contagio di alcuni virus, per esempio quello della SARS, epidemia che nel 2006 aveva seminato il panico, provocando la morte di molte persone.

E siccome nei paesi più arretrati lavarsi le mani non è un gesto così gettonato, ecco che si scoprono spiacevoli conseguenze, legate per esempio alle morti premature dei neonati. Il lavaggio delle mani con sapone da parte delle levatrici tradizionali prima del parto assicura un incremento nei tassi di sopravvivenza perinatale fino al 44%, si legge sul sito dell’Unicef. Insomma i motivi per lavarsi le mani sono davvero tanti, non a caso anche negli ospedali si raccomanda questa pratica per ridurre al minimo il contagio anche delle malattie più banali, come per esempio il raffreddore. E allora è proprio il caso di fare attenzione, no? Ne va della nostra salute!
