L’iperprolattinemia definisce la presenza di livelli anormali ed elevati di prolattina nel sangue. Questa è un ormone prodotto dalla ghiandola pituitaria, una ghiandola situata vicino alla radice del naso, che svolge un ruolo fondamentale nello sviluppo del seno durante la gravidanza e nella produzione del latte materno.

Negli uomini, i sintomi più comuni dell’iperprolattinemia sono la diminuzione della libido, la disfunzione erettile, e l’infertilità. A causa del fatto che nell’uomo non esiste un indicatore evidente come il ciclo mestruale nella donna nell’uomo le manifestazioni sintomatiche sono più difficili da riscontrare, e spesso può capitare che essi ricorrano al parere del medico solo quando si manifestano sintomi come mal di testa e problemi gli occhi causati dall’ingrossamento della ghiandola che va a premere sui nervi ottici.

L’uomo può anche non riconoscere in maniera sensibile la perdita graduale delle funzionalità sessuali o del desiderio sessuale.
Solo in seguito ad un trattamento terapeutico essi possono riscontrare la presenza di un precedente disturbo.

A causa dell’ipoestrogenismo, l’iperprolattinemia può provocare l’osteoporosi.
