Il mais è una pianta originaria dell’America Latina, tipica delle popolazioni dell’America Centrale e andina e conosciuto in Messico fin dal 2500-5000 a.c.
Quando venne introdotto in Europa, venne principalmente coltivato in Turchia, soprattutto nella zona dei Balcani e quando iniziò ad essere coltivato anche in Italia, prese il nome di grano turco, proprio a causa di questa provenienza.
Il mais contiene in maggioranza carboidrati, poche fibre grassi, proteine e molti antiossidanti tra cui la zeaxantina.
Contiene elementi utili all’ organismo in quanto è ricco di lipidi, proteine, carboidrati, sodio, ferro, fosforo, potassio e vitamina A e vitamina del gruppo B.
Il mais viene utilizzato sia sotto forma di farina che sotto forma di olio; il mais ha ottime proprietà benefiche in particolar modo è un ottimo antinfiammatorio delle vie urinarie, in modo particolare contro la litiasi urinaria, le affezioni delle vie urinarie (cistiti, reumi), la gotta ed la calcolosi renale.
Così come altri cereali come la quinoa, il mais non contiene glutine e quindi è molto adatto all’ alimentazione e allo svezzamento dei bambini e da chi è affetto dalla celiachia.
