Lo studio che lo ha dimostrato, pubblicato questa settimana sulla rivista Archives of General Psychiatry, ha preso in considerazione 50 pazienti sani suddivisi in due gruppi di controllo, il primo composto da fumatori veramente incalliti (più di 25 sigarette consumate ogni giorno), il secondo da fumatori un poco meno incalliti (15 – 24 sigarette consumate ogni giorno), ed è riuscito ad evidenziare come nel primo gruppo i livelli dell’enzima Monoamina-ossidasi A fossero notevolmente superiori rispetto a quelli riscontrati nel secondo gruppo.
È stato infatti dimostrato come l’enzima in questione, facilitando l’assorbimento della sostanze chimiche responsabili del buon’umore, sia responsabile della “felicità” che chiunque può avvertire fumando una sigaretta.

Al contrario, come evidenziato dalla ricerca canadese, la mancanza di detto enzima, coincidente con la decisione del fumatore di smettere di fumare, provocherebbe nell’ex fumatori stati di tristezza prolungata se non addirittura di vera e propria depressione.
Queste sgradevoli sensazioni, che nessuno di noi mai vorrebbe provare, impedirebbero al fumatore di smettere. Inoltre, assicurano gli esperti, il 50% delle ricadute è dovuta alla necessita di reintegrare nell’organismo proprio suddetto enzima.

Individuata la causa dell’impossibilità di smettere, i ricercatori stanno adesso cercando di elaborare, nel minor tempo possibile, una cura valida ed efficacie che possa far smettere quante più persone possibili, in considerazione del fatto che i malati di tumore a causa del fumo sono in costante aumento.
