Uno studio di ricercatori del Brigham and Women’s Hospital di Boston pubblicato su Journal of the American Medical Association manifesta forti dubbi riguardo alle conseguenze dell’operazione non invasiva per il tumore alla prostata denominata “key hole surgery”, attuata attraverso l’uso di robot.
La prostatectomia laparascopica, ovvero l’intervento non invasivo per rimuovere la prostata, offre alcuni vantaggi, riducendo i tempi dell’operazione, riducendo il dolore post operatorio, lasciando cicatrici meno evidenti ed essendo in generale meno a rischio di complicazioni durante la fase chirurgica.

Secondo la recente ricerca però tali interventi chirurgici sembra abbiano maggior incidenza nello sviluppo, in una fase successiva all’intervento, di problemi come incontinenza ed impotenza.

Lo studio su oltre 8.800 uomini ha rilevato una maggiore incidenza di complicanze genito-urinario tra coloro che praticavano la prostatectomia laparascopica, il 4,7 per cento, rispetto a coloro che si sottoponevano ad un intervento di chirurgia tradizionale, attestati al 2,1%.

Secondo i ricercatori, alla base della scelta di sottoporsi ad interventi non invasivi è la diffusione sui media dei vantaggi di questa rispetto all’intervento tradizionale, che risulta particolarmente seducente ai più proprio per i vantaggi sopra descritti.

Ci sarebbe invece poca informazione sulle conseguenze nel medio e lungo periodo quali quelle che rilevano i dati forniti dallo studio.

L’informazione mediatica inoltre non è sufficientemente esaustiva nello spiegare che tale tecnica è ancora in una fase di evoluzione, e quindi non è ancora perfezionata a tal punto da preservare la funzione urologiche e prevenire incontinenza ed impotenza.
