Alcuni scienziati britannici hanno creato uno spray nasale capace di combattere i batteri che causano la sinusite cronica, sfruttando l’azione di un enzima isolato da un batterio che in natura si può trovare sulla superficie della alghe marine.
I ricercatori della Newcastle University sono riusciti ad isolare il batterio chiamato Bacillus licheniformis, dal quale è stato estratto un enzima che è stato battezzato NucB, deossiribonucleasi batterica. Sarebbe proprio questo nuovo enzima la chiave per combattere i batteri che provocano la sinusite, in particolare quella cronica, che in alcuni casi può anche diventare invalidante.
► SINUSITE E SETTO NASALE DEVIATO
La sinusite cronica è infatti caratterizzata dalla difficoltà di essere curata per la resistenza opposta dai batteri che la provocano, i quali creano una barriera viscida chiamata biofilm, la quale non permette agli antibiotici di svolgere il loro lavoro. Gli studiosi inglesi però hanno scoperto che il nuovo enzima NucB è capace di disperdere il 58% del biofilm protettivo dei batteri.
Come spiegato dal dottor Nicholas Jakubovics, l’enzima va a rompere il DNA extracellulare, il quale agisce come una colla per tenere le cellule attaccate alla superficie dei seni paranasali. Jakubovics ha rivelato che nei test svolti in studio l’enzima NucB ha eliminato oltre la metà degli organismi testati. In totale sono stati studiati 24 ceppi di batteri diversi e tutti i biofilm prodotti che contenevano quantità importanti di DNA extracellulare. Di questi, 14 ceppi batterici diversi sono stati disgregati grazie all’azione del NucB.
