Secondo una ricerca del Norwegian Institute of Public Health e della Columbia University di New York pubblicata sulla rivista Journal of the American Medical Association, l’acido folico in gravidanza aiuta a ridurre del 40% il rischio di autismo nel nascituro.
La ricerca ha stabilito che assumere integratori di acido folico da quattro settimane prima a otto settimane dopo la gravidanza, può far abbassare addirittura del 40% il rischio che il neonato soffra di autismo.
L’acido folico ed i folati, essendo vitamine del gruppo B coinvolti nella sintesi di molecole importanti come il Dna e l’Rna, sono fondamentali per le cellule che eseguono processi di differenziazione e rapida proliferazione, quali le cellule del sangue e della pelle, inoltre sono molto importanti durante la formazione dell’embrione. Lo studio ha scoperto che è fondamentale che le donne integrino l’acido folico nella loro dieta durante la gravidanza, perchè seppur presente in molti alimenti (nella carne, nel lievito di birra e in molti vegetali), esso viene ridotto circa dell’80% durante la cottura.
La ricerca ha preso in esame 85.176 neonati venuti alla luce tra il 2002 e il 2008, oltre ai genitori. Il risultato è che le madri che hanno assunto integratori di acido folico hanno ridotto del 40% il rischio di avere un bambino con problemi di autismo rispetto a chi non aveva assunto l’integratore. In questi anni sono stati diagnosticati 270 casi di autismo e malattie simili.
