Il tabacco, si sa, fa male, aumenta i fattori di rischio tra la popolazione per diversi tipi di malattie e patologie e provoca dipendenza. Ed è oltremodo dannoso e pericoloso, come afferma una nuova ricerca pubblicata sulla rivista statunitense Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities nel mese di giugno, per le persone con disabilità intellettive e di sviluppo, per le quali il tabacco può causare ancora più gravi conseguenze.

L’autore dello studio, il dottor Marc L. Steinberg, assistente professore di psichiatria presso la Robert Wood Johnson Medical School della University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey è tassativo al riguardo quando afferma che spesso gli operatori sanitari trascurano del tutto l’aspetto del consumo di tabacco e dell’esposizione al fumo passivo per questa tipologia di popolazione.

Il gruppo di studiosi ha individuato una serie di problematiche e di implicazioni negative che riguardano proprio le persone con disabilità mentali e problemi nello sviluppo nella loro relazione con questa sostanza:
• Le persone con disabilità intellettive o di sviluppo hanno una probabilità tre volte più alta del resto della popolazione di vivere in condizioni di povertà, e la dipendenza dal tabacco non fa che influire sulle già poche risorse finanziarie.

• l’uso del tabacco può diminuire l’efficacia di alcuni farmaci comunemente prescritti.
• Per ironia della sorte, molte di queste persone sono diventate dipendenti dal tabacco proprio nelle stesse strutture che dovrebbero sostenerli ed aiutarli. Non è raro che, in passato, gli operatori usassero addirittura la sigaretta come forma di “premio” per un buon comportamento o per un particolare compito svolto con successo.

• Sono già rare le occasioni in cui questi individui possono avere accesso a programmi di trattamento per smettere l’uso del tabacco, ed è ancora più facile che per il resto della popolazione che questi trattamenti falliscano perchè i pazienti hanno notevoli difficoltà a comprendere le informazioni sanitarie fornite in questi programmi.
