Eritropoietina utile per combattere la SLA

Una preliminare ricerca tutta italiana, condotta dagli scienziati dell’Istituto Neurologico Besta di Milano grazie ai fondi messi a disposizione di ARISLA (Agenzia di RIcerca per la Sclerosi Laterale Amiotrofica), avrebbe dimostrato, in via del tutto teorica, la possibilità che l’EPO, la famigerata eritropoietina utilizzata come dopante da ciclisti, calciatori e la quasi totalità degli sportivi di qualsiasi genere, possa curare, o per lo meno rallentare in maniera significativa, la Sclerosi Laterale Amiotrofica.

L’idea di provare ad utilizzare l’EPO per far fronte alla degenerazione dei neuroni provocata proprio dalla SLA, comunque, non è nuova. Soltanto oggi, però, si sarebbero evidenziate abbastanza occorrenze scientifiche che giustificherebbero l’inizio di una fase sperimentale.

Adesso, dunque, partiranno i trials clinici, che si evince saranno condotti su una 50ina di volontari affetti dalla terribile patologia, il cui scopo sarà quello di convalidare le ipotesi dei ricercatori nonché di individuare le dosi dell’ormone che qualunque paziente possa tollerare così che la cura possa essere considerata efficacie senza per questo essere dannosa.

Inoltre, se possibile, grazie allo studio si cercheranno di individuare con chiarezza i meccanismi di funzionamento dell’EPO nonché della malattia vera e propria.

Lo scopo dichiarato, dunque, non è soltanto quello di curare la malattia bensì di individuare dei marcatori che possano far individuare precocemente la suddette patologia e, dunque, attivare tutta una serie di comportamenti preventivi e strategie terapeutiche che possano scongiurare l’insorgenza della SLA o limitarne sul nascere gli effetti negativi.
