L’afasia è un disturbo neurologico che provoca problemi nel linguaggio. Il sintomo principale è dunque quello della difficoltà di comunicazione, anche se la condizione può colpire ogni individuo in modo diverso per intensità o modalità di sviluppo. Talvolta l’afasia è immediata ed improvvisa (se la causa ad esempio è un ictus o un grave trauma cranico), mentre in altri casi si manifesta con gradualità (in presenza di un danno cerebrale progressivo dovuto a tumore, demenza, malattia neurologica, ecc). Scopriamone insieme i sintomi in base alle tipologie in cui l’afasia viene distinta.

Afasia espressiva

Si parla di afasia espressiva quando chi ne soffre ha difficoltà a comunicare i propri pensieri, idee e messaggi agli altri. Ciò può influenzare le modalità del discorso, della scrittura, la capacità di fare gesti esplicativi (indicare una strada o un oggetto), o disegno. Come è facile immaginare ciò può provocare seri danni nelle attività quotidiane come usare il telefono, scrivere una mail o più semplicemente parlare i propri familiari ed amici.
Tra i sintomi di afasia espressiva possiamo trovare:

  • Discorso lento e zoppicante
  • Difficoltà nel trovare le parole giuste, come i nomi di oggetti, luoghi o persone
  • Contenuto del discorso sintetizzato al massimo con nomi e verbi basilari (volere bere-andare oggi spesa)
  • Nello scrivere, errori di ortografia o grammaticali mai fatti in precedenza
  • Utilizzo errato ed involontario di parole (ad esempio sedia anziché armadio)
  • Essere in grado di parlare e scrivere, ma con testi inframezzati da parole e frasi senza senso.

 

Afasia ricettiva

Nell’afasia ricettiva invece, chi ne soffre non ha problemi a comunicare i concetti, ma a comprenderli a fondo: sia che si leggono sia che se si ascoltino. Questo tipo di afasia può comprendere anche la difficoltà ad interpretare i gesti, i disegni, i numeri e le immagini. Ciò ovviamente influenza negativamente le normali attività. Le persone con afasia ricettiva possono avere alcuni dei seguenti segni e sintomi:

  • Difficoltà a capire cosa dicono gli altri
  • Difficoltà a comprendere parole scritte
  • Fraintendere il significato di parole, gesti, immagini o disegni
  • Dare risposte prive di senso in quanto si è fraintesa la domanda
  • Non rendersi conto della propria difficoltà di comprendere.

 

 

Afasia primaria progressiva

Questo tipo di afasia si verifica nelle persone con alcune forme di demenza. Trattandosi -come dice il nome- di una condizione progressiva, i sintomi inizialmente lievi, peggiorano nel tempo. Di solito, il primo problema è quello di non riuscire a trovare la parola giusta o ricordare il nome di qualcuno. Con il progredire del disturbo si può andare incontro a:

  • Difficoltà nel fare discorsi, errando nell’emissione dei suoni delle parole, con errori grammaticali
  • Le frasi diventano semplici e brevi, lente nell’essere esposte
  • Dimenticanza del significato di parole complesse e poi anche di quelle più semplici
  • Ovvia e conseguente progressiva difficoltà nell’esprimere i propri bisogni, emozioni o altro con la graduale perdita di capacità di adesione a qualunque conversazione.

 

In una fase più avanzata, le persone affette da afasia primaria progressiva possono sperimentare anche altri sintomi come sostanziali cambiamenti nella personalità e nel comportamento, difficoltà con la memoria e il pensiero simile al morbo di Alzheimer , o difficoltà di movimento simile alla malattia di Parkinson .
