La ricerca, che sarà pubblicata prossimamente sulla rivista Biological Psychiatry, ha monitorato attraverso la risonanza magnetica funzionale come il cervello delle persone affette dal disturbo reagisce di fronte a determinati stimoli sociali ed emozionali.
Si è scoperto che quando le persone con disturbo borderline hanno cercato di controllare o ridurre le proprie reazioni davanti ad episodi emotivi forti ed inquietanti, alcune aree del cervello, in particolare la corteccia cingolata anteriore ed i solchi intraparietali che si attivano nella persona sana restavano invece inattivi.
Ciò significherebbe che i pazienti borderline non sono in grado di utilizzare quelle parti del cervello che le persone sane utilizzano per regolare le proprie emozioni e potrebbe quindi spiegare perché le loro reazioni emotive sono così estreme.
Al centro delle patologie borderline potrebbero quindi esserci basi biologiche che provocano disturbi nel sistema di controllo emotivo del cervello.
Studiare quali aree del cervello non funzionano in maniera corretta potrebbe essere di grande aiuto per realizzare interventi psicoterapeutici e farmacologici più mirati e più efficaci.
Oltre a ciò si potrebbe individuare la presenza di eventuali basi genetiche della malattia.
