I ricercatori lanciano un nuovo allarme sull’inquinamento, dopo lo studio dell’Unione Europea che parla di mezzo milioni di morti all’anno a causa della cattiva qualità dell’aria.
La nuova ricerca arriva dall’America, ed equipara l’inquinamento cittadino a fumare un pacchetto al giorno. La ricerca ha coinvolto sei grandi città americane, da Los Angeles a New York, da Chicago a Baltimora fino a St. Paul e Winston-Salem.
Lo studio ha preso come campione 7mila persone adulte e ne ha analizzato le condizioni fisiche con particolare riguardo all’ozono, al particolato, all’azoto e al carbone respirati. Le analisi sono state condotte per quasi venti anni, con strumenti quali la spirometria e la Tac.
Respirare inquinamento equivale a fumare
Con gli strumenti tecnici sono state evidenti, nel lungo tempo, le conseguenze dell’inalazione degli inquinanti. Le malattie generate dall’inquinamento sono quelle classiche dei fumatori, quali l’enfisema, cronico. Una malattia molto serie perché abbassa la capacità di portare al sangue il prezioso ossigeno.
La comparazione è stata fatta misurando sia gli inquinanti, che analizzando i pazienti. Si tratta di una ricerca completa, perché effettuata nell’arco di un ventennio circa (17 anni esatti) con lo scopo preciso di stabilire quale collegamento c’è tra l’inquinamento e la salute delle persone. Sono state calcolate tutte le variabili che potevano influire sulla salute delle persone, come le abitudini di vita e l’età.
Il nemico è invisibile ma micidiale, con particolare attenzione all’ozono al suolo, presente come reazione chimica dell’irraggiamento solare con i gas espulsi dalle auto. L’ozono, naturalmente presente nelle parti alte dell’atmosfera, quando respirato provoca irritazioni e infezioni.
Da qui i ricercatori hanno misurato un aumento consistente dei casi di enfisema, collegandolo, a titolo di esempio, al fumare sigarette.
Il professore di Medicina ed epidemiologia Columbia University Irving Medical Center, R. Graham Barr, che ha guidato il team di ricercatori, punta il dito proprio contro l’ozono. Gli altri inquinanti sono infatti diminuiti, rispetto al passato, grazie alle misure a tutela della salute prese dai vari governi, ma l’ozono, formandosi come reazione chimica, è difficile da limitare, a meno che non si eliminino del tutto i combustibili fossili.
Tra l’altro, la dannosità dell’ozono è stata rilevata recentemente, e ancora non si sono stabiliti dei limiti minimi per la sua pericolosità.
Lo studio ha interessato anche il Royal College of Physicians in Gran Bretagna, che è intervenuto alla Cnn. Sempre secondo lo studio, solo nel 2011 sono più di 100mila le morti riconducibili all’inquinamento.
