Cosa significa avere il cuore ingrossato? Perché si ingrossa e quali conseguenze può avere? Dal punto di vista clinico, tale condizione, nota come cardiomegalia è considerata il sintomo di un problema cardiovascolare, il segnale di un qualcosa che non va, più che una vera e propria malattia. Numerose sono le cause, alcune prevenibili e /o curabili. Ecco quali sono.
Cardiomegalia o cuore ingrossato, tutte le cause
La cardiomegalia può essere causata da patologie o condizioni tali da costringere il cuore a pompare più sangue, oppure con maggiori difficoltà o comunque da malattie che danneggiano la funzionalità di tale prezioso organo.
A volte il cuore si dilata (ed indebolisce) per ragioni sconosciute (idiopatiche), ma le cause più comuni sono:
- Ipertensione: in questi casi il cuore ha maggiore difficoltà a pompare il sangue per distribuirlo al resto dell’organismo il che alla lunga può comportare una dilatazione ed un indebolimento del muscolo. In particolare la pressione alta può causare la dilatazione del ventricolo sinistro o delle camere superiori del cuore (atri).
- Malattia della valvola cardiaca. Le valvole cardiache sono 4 e la loro funzione consiste nel fatto che il sangue scorra bene e nella giusta direzione. Febbre reumatica, difetto cardiaco/ valvolare congenito, endocardite infettiva, farmaci o altre situazioni particolari possono danneggiare queste valvole con conseguente ingrossamento del cuore .
- Malattia del muscolo cardiaco (cardiomiopatia). Dato che questo ispessimento e irrigidimento del muscolo cardiaco progredisce, il cuore si può dilatare per cercare di pompare più sangue.
- Ipertensione polmonare: in presenza di pressione alta sull’arteria che collega il cuore ai polmoni, aumenta lo sforzo per pompare il sangue. Tenderà ad ingrossarsi il lato destro del cuore.
- Basso numero di globuli rossi. L’anemia cronica, non trattata può portare ad un battito cardiaco rapido o irregolare.
- Disturbi della tiroide. Ipotiroidismo ed ipertiroidismo possono portare a problemi di cuore, tra cui la cardiomegalia.
- Ferro eccessivo nel corpo (emocromatosi). L’emocromatosi è una malattia in cui il vostro corpo non metabolizzare correttamente ferro, inducendolo ad accumularsi in vari organi, compreso il cuore. Ciò può provocare una dilatazione del ventricolo sinistro.
- Malattie rare come l’amiloidosi. L’amiloidosi è una condizione in cui proteine anomale circolano nel sangue e possono essere depositate nel cuore, alterandone la funzionalità e conducendolo ad un progressivo ingrossamento.
- Versamento del pericardio: ovvero di liquido intorno al cuore. Ad una radiografia il cuore in tal caso può erroneamente sembrare ingrandito, non lo è, ma comunque non è una condizione da sottovalutare.
Fattori di rischio
Tra i fattori di rischio, che quindi si possono aggiungere alle cause di un cuore ingrossato troviamo:
- Familiarità con questo problema o comunque con cardiomiopatia
- Malattia coronarica: placche di grasso ostruiscono le arterie del cuore. E’ una condizione molto pericolosa che può condurre anche ad un attacco cardiaco.
- Cardiopatia congenita.
- Cardiopatia valvolare. Il cuore ha quattro valvole – aortica, mitrale, polmonare e tricuspide – che aprono e chiudono per dirigere il flusso di sangue attraverso il cuore. Condizioni che danneggiano le valvole possono causare un ingrossamento del cuore.
- Un attacco di cuore. Avere un attacco di cuore aumenta il rischio di sviluppare un ingrossamento del cuore.
Conseguenze e complicazioni
Un cuore ingrossato può portare ad un’insufficienza cardiovascolare, con sintomatologie e rischi di varia entità a seconda della parte colpita. Non va trascurato, perché tra i pericoli c’è anche l’arresto cardiaco con morte improvvisa.
