Il pidocchio del cuoio capelluto è un insetto parassita nella cui forma adulta è lungo dai 2 ai 3 millimetri, che infesta testa e collo delle persone nutrendosi di sangue umano che si procura pungendo la pelle. Depone le uova, piccoli globuli bianchi a grappolo, alla base dei capelli, generalmente nella zona posteriore della testa, sulla nuca e dietro le orecchie.
Il pidocchio non vola e non salta, e l’infestazione dunque avviene da persona a persona solo nel caso in cui il parassita si può spostare dai capelli di una persona all’altra.
Gli animali domestici come cani e gatti non hanno alcun ruolo nella trasmissione dei pidocchi dell’uomo.
Il pidocchio non è portatore di malattie, e quindi non è considerato un rischio per la salute.
Se l’infestazione dei pidocchi è molto blanda, oppure molto recente possono anche non esserci sintomi.
Il prurito resta il sintomo più comune della pediculosi, ed è causato dal fatto che la pelle ha una reazione di carattere allergico alla puntura dell’insetto.
