Dopo aver parlato delle proprietà di alcune erbe aromatiche come prezzemolo, salvia, basilico, origano e rosmarino, oggi vorremmo parlare delle proprietà del cacao.
Il cacao è una pianta sempreverde che cresce fino a dieci metri e appartiene alla famiglia delle Sterculiacee; la pianta del cacao è originaria del Sud America e fu proprio Cristoforo Colombo ad importarla in Europa, durante i suoi viaggi.



Il cacao contiene lipidi, glucidi e proteine ma è anche ricco di sali minerali come il magnesio, potassio, il ferro, il fosforo, il sodio ed il calcio.
Nel cacao sono presenti anche delle sostanze chimiche che hanno delle notevoli proprietà benefiche per l’intero organismo, a partire dalla caffeina, la tiramina, la feniletilamina e last, but not the least, la serotonina.
Il cacao, essendo molto ricco di carboidrati, sali minerali e vitamine è molto consigliato per chi svolge un’attività fisica intensa e quello fondente, che quindi è naturale e con un minor apporto di grassi, è ricco di antiossidanti che permettono di combattere il proliferare dei radicali liberi e quindi, conseguentemente rallentare l’invecchiamento delle cellule.
All’interno del cacao è contenuta la teobromina, una sostanza che, assieme alla caffeina, migliora la concentrazione e la prontezza di riflessi e la serotonina invece ha la funzione di aiutare il sistema nervoso in caso di depressione.
Nel cioccolato fondente è presente anche l’epicatechina, la sostanza che dà il caratteristico gusto amaro, ma che possiede moltissime proprietà antiossidanti.
