Acqua potabile killer? È una prospettiva che potrebbe trasformarsi in realtà anche se non immediatamente. Il problema della presenza di arsenico nell’acqua potabile bel oltre i limiti consentiti dalla legge, riguarda soprattutto la regione Lazio con 91 comuni a rischio, di cui 60 in provincia di Viterbo, 22 comuni in di Roma e 9 in provincia di Latina.
L’arsenico è già stato catalogato come elemento cancerogeno certo di classe 1 dall’Airc, l’associazione internazionale di ricerca sul cancro e i suoi effetti dannosi se non mortali sono noti.
Ma quali sono i rischi concreti per la salute con livelli di arsenico superiore rispetto alla norma? A stilare una classifica c ha pensato la “Valutazione epidemiologica degli effetti sulla salute in relazione alla contaminazione da arsenico nelle acque potabili nelle popolazioni residenti nei comuni del Lazio” realizzata dal Dipartimento di Epidemiologia del Servizio sanitario della Regione Lazio.
I dati rilevati dall’Arpa tra il 2005 e il 2011 hanno lasciato emergere un quadro piuttosto preoccupante.
DIAGNOSTICARE TUMORE AI POLMONI
I livelli alti di arsenico aumentano l’incidenza dei tumori maligni, in particolare ai polmoni e alla vescica, ma anche del diabete mellito, dell’ipertensione, di infarto e di infertilità negli adulti.
Anche i bambini possono essere colpiti accusando disturbi nei comportamenti come ad esempio la sindrome da deficit di attenzione, l’iperattività o l’autismo.
In particolare nei comuni in cui il livello di arsenico risulti superiore ai 20 microgrammi al litro i dati mostrano chiaramente un aumento del 10% della mortalità per tutte le cause e l’aumento considerevole delle malattie del sistema circolatorio sia negli uomini sia nella donne. Nei comuni in cui il livello di arsenico nell’acqua è contenuto, effetti del genere non vengono riscontrati. Insomma l’acqua e il cibo contaminati arrivano a uccidere la popolazione e l’Italia ha tempo fino al 31 dicembre prossimo per potersi adeguare (con l’installazione di dearsenificatori) alle direttive europee sui valori di arsenico nell’acqua che non possono superare i 10 microgrammi /litro.
