L’itterizia non è da considerarsi una vera e propria malattia, quanto invece la manifestazione di una serie di disturbi epatici.
Il fattore scatenante dell’ittero è la presenza eccessiva nel sangue di una sostanza, la bilirubina, quando questa supera determinate quantità, che variano dai 2 ai 3 mg ogni 100 ml di sangue. La bilirubina è una sostanza prodotta dalla distruzione dei globuli rossi, che viene assorbita ed elaborata dal fegato.

A causa di particolari malattie come l’anemia emolitica, oppure a causa di determinate epatopatie come le intossicazioni da alcool, le cirrosi, o le epatiti, questo non accade. Il fegato cioè non riesce più a coniugare la bilirubina con l’acido glucuronico per trasformarla in bile.

Un altro motivo che può scatenare l’aumento di questa è l’ostruzione dei condotti biliari, per esempio in presenza di calcoli, che provocano l’accumulo della bile nella cistifellea ed il suo travaso nell’apparato circolatorio.

Tra i fenomeni più evidenti dell’itterizia sicuramente il bianco dell’occhio e la pelle del viso che si colorano di giallo, le urine di un colore marcatamente scuro e le feci bianche.
Un fenomeno che può presentarsi accompagnato all’itterizia è anche il prurito.

Essendo l’itterizia una manifestazione di disturbi che occorrono al nostro organismo, in particolare al fegato ed alla cistifellea, è proprio curando questi che il sintomo scompare.
