Cos’è la terapia adiuvante e perché viene somministrata
La terapia adiuvante è una parte fondamentale del trattamento del carcinoma della mammella, destinata a ridurre il rischio di recidiva dopo l’intervento chirurgico. Viene somministrata a completamento della chirurgia, con l’obiettivo di eliminare eventuali cellule tumorali residue che non sono visibili con gli esami diagnostici.
Questa strategia si basa sul principio che, anche in presenza di una rimozione completa del tumore visibile, micrometastasi potrebbero essersi già diffuse nell’organismo. Trattandole precocemente, si riduce in modo significativo la probabilità che la malattia si ripresenti, localmente o a distanza.

La decisione di somministrare una terapia adiuvante, e il tipo di trattamento da adottare, dipendono da una serie di fattori clinici e biologici. Tra i più rilevanti troviamo dimensioni del tumore, grado istologico, stato dei linfonodi, recettori ormonali, proliferazione (Ki-67) e stato HER2.
