Purtroppo ad oggi il tasso di sopravvivenza al cancro ovarico è molto basso, perchè di solito la diagnosi avviene con la malattia che si è già diffusa. Se non ci si accorge della presenza del cancro non esistono modi per trovarlo, perciò è facile capire perchè sarebbe fondamentale riuscire a trovare un modo per scovarlo in anticipo.
Uno dei metodi finora conosciuti per riconoscere un cancro alle ovaie è quello di “odorarlo”, dal momento che questa patologia sembra avere un odore ben preciso. I cani in tal senso potrebbero essere molto utili, visto che il loro olfatto è molto più sviluppato rispetto a quello dell’uomo, e visto che vengono già usati in molti altri campi per questa loro peculiarità.
Proprio per questo motivo gli scienziati del Monell Chemical Senses Center vogliono sfruttare questa capacità canina per scovare il cancro ovarico nelle prime fasi. Grazie alla sovvvenzione di 80mila dollari da parte del “Kaleidoscope of Hope Foundation” di Madison in New Jersey, gli scienziati dell’University of Pennsylvania’s Working Dog Center hanno già avviato i lavori per addestrare un gruppo di tre cani da poter usare per fiutare la presenza delle cellule cancerose in campioni di sangue e tessuti donati da pazienti affette da cancro ovarico.
L’obiettivo è poi quello di creare un sensore artificiale in grado di fiutare la presenza del tumore, da utilizzare in ambulatorio per la diagnosi precoce della malattia. Nel nostro Paese il cancro ovarico colpisce circa 5.000 donne ogni anno e rappresenta il 3% di tutte le neoplasie femminili, inoltre è tra le prime cinque cause di morte per tumore.
