Gimnofobia (paura della nudità)

La parola gimnofobia deriva dal greco “gymnos” (nudo) e “phobos” (paura). Con questo termine dunque si intende una paura irrazionale della nudità. Si esprime in modi diversi a seconda delle persone: c’è chi teme di spogliarsi totalmente in pubblico (come nello spogliatoio di una palestra o una doccia) e chi invece ha paura anche della propria nudità in solitudine. Alcuni individui hanno il timore di vedere spogliati gli altri. Anche l’intensità dello stato d’ansia correlato può variare, da un forte disagio ad una estrema difficoltà di vita relazionale ( e sessuale).

Cause

Quali sono le cause? La gimnophobia può avere molte motivazioni diverse. Coloro che hanno vissuto un trauma sessuale però sembrano essere a maggior rischio, così come chi è stato cresciuto in una cultura o religione che disapprova le nudità. Anche i bambini e gli adolescenti possono sviluppare questa fobia, anche solo se vittime di bullismo o in stato di confusione per un diverso sviluppo del loro corpo rispetto ai coetanei.
La gimnofobia è a volte correlata ad altre paure come quella di essere vulnerabile, o dell’intimità. Può anche essere collegata ad un disordine dismorfico del corpo, ad ansia sociale e ad altre condizioni di salute mentale che inducono gli individui ad essere ipercritici nei confronti di se stesso e quindi a disagio di fronte all’esposizione di fisicità e nudità. Un maggior rischio di sviluppare tale paura infine, può essere riscontrato, come è facile immaginare, anche in chi è affetto da deturpazioni o che ha vistose cicatrici sul corpo. Chiaramente, è importante sottolinearlo, la gimnofobia non è l’equivalente si un semplice imbarazzo, ma di una paura irrazionale che condiziona la vita e le relazioni sociali.

Gimnofobia, cura e convivenza

Molte persone affette da gimnofobia trovano che semplici accortezze li aiutino a mantenere sotto controllo tutte le ansie ed i timori: basta ad esempio che evitino di fare la doccia in palestra dopo lo sport, o pratichino i rapporti sessuali al buio. Purtroppo però questa tecnica non funziona per tutti e non per sempre. Le fobie, compresa questa della nudità infatti, tendono spesso a peggiorare con il tempo se non trattate. Cosa fare allora? Rivolgersi ad uno specialista è importante per riuscire a trovare il proprio percorso personale di trattamento.
La gimnofobia, come tutte le fobie, risponde bene ad una gran varietà di metodi terapeutici. A seconda della scuola di pensiero dello specialista a cui ci si rivolge si potrebbe ad esempio essere incoraggiati a sondare il passato alla ricerca della causa primaria scatenante la paura della nudità. Oppure si possono apprendere delle tecniche per superare i pensieri negativi ed imparare a convivere, prima ancora che superare, con la propria fobia. Qualunque sia il percorso, bisognerà dimostrare pazienza perché le cure in materia di fobia richiedono spesso molto tempo.
