Sentirsi preoccupati o nervosi è una condizione normale nella vita quotidiana e ad ognuno di noi può essere capitato più di una volta.
Questa condizione, identificata in medicina come ansia, può essere, nei casi in cui essa sia lieve o moderata, addirittura uno stimolo a focalizzare l’attenzione, le energie e le motivazioni del proprio agire. Quando invece essa è grave, possono insorgere sentimenti di impotenza, confusione e preoccupazione che sono sproporzionati al motivo che le catena.

Questo tipo di ansia, opprimente e capace di interferire sulla vita quotidiana non è una condizione normale, e può essere la manifestazione dei sintomi di una condizione altamente problematica, la depressione.

L’ansia è in grado di manifestarsi attraverso sintomi sia fisici che emotivi. In una situazione specifica, questi possono insorgere insieme, e durare per un breve o lungo periodo per poi scomparire.

Tra i sintomi fisici dell’ansia si includono:

* Tremore, spasmi, o agitazione.
* Sensazione di oppressione in gola o nel petto.
* Affanno, tachicardia.
* Vertigini.
* Sudorazione, mani fredde e appiccicose.
* Eccitabilità.
* Tensione muscolare, dolori o indolenzimento (mialgie).
* Estrema stanchezza.
* Problemi di sonno tra i quali l’incapacità di addormentarsi o dormire, svegliarsi presto, un sentimento di irrequietezza causato dal non sentirsi riposati quando ci si sveglia.

L’ansia influenza quella parte del cervello che controlla il modo in cui comunichiamo con gli altri.
Perciò diventano maggiormente difficoltose le relazioni, sia dal punto di vista creativo che funzionale.

Le sintomatologie di tipo emotivo dell’ansia includono:

* Irrequietezza, irritabilità, agitazione.
* Le preoccupazioni prendono il sopravvento sul resto.
* Costante timore che stia per accadere qualcosa di brutto.
* Sensazione di essere condannati o destinati a fallire.
* Incapacità di concentrarsi, sensazione di avere la mente svuotata.

Quando l’ansia si manifesta con questi sintomi in maniera costante e diventa cronica, allora verrà diagnosticato un disturbo d’ansia, a sua volta suddiviso in diverse categorie: disturbo d’ansia generalizzata, fobia sociale, attacchi di panico, e fobie specifiche come il disturbo post traumatico da stress ed il disturbo ossessivo compulsivo.
