Il cortisolo è un ormone prodotto dalle ghiandole surrenali su stimolo della ghiandola ipofisi, ed è quello che generalmente viene considerato ed identificato come “ormone dello stress”.
Ciò perchè esso viene prodotto dall’organismo nel momento in cui questo è sottoposto a stress, sia che si tratti di uno stress fisico dovuto per esempio ad un esercizio fisico particolarmente intenso, sia che si tratti di uno stress psicologico.

E’ spesso prodotto anche nei casi in cui si è sottoposti ad interventi chirurgici.

La funzione del cortisolo è quella di mantenere, in una situazione di stress, le funzioni vitali al meglio delle loro funzioni, riducendo quelle funzioni che non sono, in quel momento, strettamente indispensabili.

Tale attività si esplica nell’abbassamento della funzionalità del sistema immunitario, nell’aumento del tasso di zuccheri nel sangue e nella trasformazione delle proteine in glucosio, in un aumento della quantità di sangue pompato nel cuore e nell’utilizzo dei grassi accumulati.

I benefici notevoli del lavoro del cortisolo vengono però ad essere un problema se, invece di ridursi una volta terminata la condizione di stress, il livello di questo ormone continua ad essere elevato.

Ecco allora che i benefici si trasformano in problemi che possono anche essere molto seri.

L’ipercortisolismo può infatti essere la causa scatenante di tutta una serie di disturbi, come l’ipertensione, l’osteoporosi, la facilità di contrarre infezioni, obesità ed arteriosclerosi, diabete, problemi psicologici e depressione, oltre ad essere fattore scatenante del Morbo di Cushing.
