Sarebbe non un semplice modo di dire, ma una vera e propria realtà. Secondo una recente ricerca condotta dall‘American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology e pubblicata pubblicata nel numero di maggio degli Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, i bambini allergici al lattosio potrebbero essere anche allergici ai comunissimi gessetti che vengono utilizzati durante le lezioni alla lavagna. 

Capita molto spesso che la polvere dei gessetti possa scatenare qualche starnuto di troppo, ma per chi soffre di intolleranza al lattosio, le situazione è più grave. I famigerati gessetti infatti contengono la caseina, una proteina del latte: sotto forma di particelle le proteine possono essere inalate dai bambini e scatenare pericolose reazioni allergiche in chi soffre di allergia al latte.

Tosse, respiro sibilante e dispea (difficoltà respiratoria) possono essere solo alcuni dei sintomi allergici, accompagnati anche da starnuti, perdita di muco, congestione nasale, attacchi di asma nei casi più gravi.

Anche il cancellino della lavagna poi può causare problemi non indifferenti perché agitandolo nell’aria va a rilasciare le stesse particelle scatenando le stesse reazioni allergiche. Le insidie della caseina sotto forma di particelle però non si fermano qui visto che possono anche essere nascoste nella colla, nei fogli di carta e nell’inchiostro.

Solo negli Stati Uniti si stima che i bambini e gli insegnanti allergici siano anche ai gessetti scolastici si attesti intorno alle 300mila unità.

Come comportarsi allora? Secondo Carlos Rallamendi, uno degli autori della ricerca, per i bambini allergici sarebbe consigliabile sedersi in fondo alla classe in modo da evitare il contatto ravvicinato e continuo con le particelle di caseina ed evitare anche le inalazioni pericolose per la loro salute.

Anche se i sintomi dell’intolleranza al lattosio si manifestano piuttosto velocemente, la loro intensità resta legata al quantitativo di lattosio assunto e in questo caso al quantitativo di polveri inalate.
