L‘infiammazione cronica è davvero molto pericolosa per la salute, nonostante in molti ne sottovalutino i rischi. Quando si accusa dolore, molto spesso, non si indaga a fondo sulle cause ma ci si limita ad assumere un anti-infiammatorio o un anti-dolorifico che magari risolve il problema nell’immediato ma di certo non lo risolve a lungo termine. L’infiammazione si fa così cronica e, alla lunga, può diventare causa di numerose malattie pericolose per la salute.
Alberto Mantovani, direttore scientifico dell’Irccs Humanitas di Rozzano (Mi) e docente dell’Humanitas University, spiega perché l’infiammazione cronica e non scovata può diventare molto pericolosa per la salute:
Patologie diverse fra loro come infarto, cancro, obesità, diabete, malattie neurodegenerative condividono meccanismi infiammatori. Nell’obesità, per esempio, la sovrabbondanza di tessuto adiposo invia segnali che disorientano i macrofagi, cellule che di norma orchestrano le funzioni del grasso corporeo e che con l’eccesso di peso iniziano invece a produrre molecole pro-infiammatorie, che sono alla base delle conseguenze negative dei tanti chili di troppo, tumori compresi. Si tratta di un’infiammazione “a combustione lenta”, di cui non è immediato riconoscere la presenza
E’ sempre più chiaro, insomma, che l’infiammazione cronica, ma sottotraccia, è presente in molte patologie diverse fra loro (dall’infarto ai tumori) tipiche del mondo occidentale. Francesco Prati, presidente del Centro per la Lotta contro l’Infarto – Fondazione Onlus, aggiunge:
In presenza di infiammazione è più probabile che le placche aterosclerotiche si rompano provocando un infarto, inoltre le placche più “cattive” contengono una quantità maggiore di cellule infiammatorie. Il colesterolo alto è uno dei fattori che più incrementa il livello di infiammazione generale nei vasi, per cui una prima mossa preventiva è cercare di tenerlo basso con uno stile di vita sano, fatto di dieta equilibrata e movimento regolare
