Un recente studio condotto dai ricercatori dell’Università di Copenaghen, in Danimarca, ha scoperto che il mal di testa potrebbe anche modificare in maniera permanente la struttura del cervello.
Lo studio, pubblicato su Neurology, la rivista medica dell’American Academy of Neurology (AAN), suggerisce che l’emicrania può alterare in modo permanente la struttura del cervello in vari modi, come spiegato dal dottor Messoud Ashina, principale autore dello studio. Solitamente l’emicrania è considerata una patologia benigna, senza conseguenze a lungo termine per il cervello, ma questo nuovo studio sembra dire il contrario.
Sono stati effettuati 6 studi basati sulla popolazione e 13 studi clinici per scoprire se le persone che sono state oggetto di episodi di emicrania o emicrania con aura hanno avuto un aumento del rischio di lesioni cerebrali, anomalie silenziose o cambiamenti nel volume del cervello (rilevato tramite scansioni MRI), in confronto alle persone che non hanno sperimentato il mal di testa. Le meta-analisi hanno evidenziato che il rischio maggiore lo avevano corso quelli che hanno sperimentato l’emicrania con aura, dal momento che questa aumentava del 68% le probabilità che vi fossero delle lesioni cerebrali, anomalie nella materia bianca del cervello e un volume cerebrale alterato. Nelle persone che avevano sperimentato soltanto l’emicrania il rischio era del 34%.

Inoltre i soggetti che avevano sperimentato l’emicrania con aura avevano un rischio del 44% maggiore di infarto o attacco cardiaco legato alle anomalie, in confronto a quelli che avevano avuto episodi di emicrania senz’aura. Erano più comuni anche variazioni nel volume del cervello nei soggetti che avevano sofferto sia di emicrania con aura che emicrania, in confronto a chi non ne aveva sofferto.
