L’arteriosclerosi viene provocata quando, all’interno dei vasi sanguigni cominciano a depositarsi, a causa di una lesione dello strato più interno dell’arteria, l’endotelio, i grassi contenuti nel sangue che si accumulano nell’interstizio creatosi.

In seguito tale accumulo continua ad aumentare di volume con il deposito in quel punto di altre sostanze presenti nel sangue, fino a provocare, nel tratto interessato la formazione di una placca, che, indurendosi, provoca un irrigidimento generale delle pareti delle arterie, e la conseguente perdita di elasticità di queste.

Può anche accadere che la consistenza della placca produca una sua frammentazione in piccoli frammenti che vengono trasportati dal sangue e possono in alcuni casi andare ad ostruire i capillari più provigil piccoli (emboli).

L’arteriosclerosi non si manifesta in alcun modo, diffondendosi ed aggravandosi senza farsi notare ma il restringimento e la perdita di elasticità delle arterie provoca un minore afflusso di ossigeno e di elementi nutritivi che il sangue distribuisce agli organi ed alle cellule del corpo, ma il fenomeno più grave accade se l’arteria blocca del tutto il flusso sanguigno.

Quando ciò si manifesta, può essere particolarmente grave e pericoloso se vengono completamente occluse le arterie che portano il sangue al cuore (infarto, angina) al cervello (ictus, ischemia cerebrale), o agli arti inferiori, che possono causare la cancrena alle gambe.

Sebbene non siano del tutto chiari i motivi per cui inizia il processo di accumulazione dei grassi e la formazione delle placche, è certo che ci sono alcuni fattori scatenanti che contribuiscono ad aumentare il rischio che ciò accada:

La dieta se questa è ricca di grassi (colesterolo), l’obesità ed il sovrappeso.
Il fumo e l’alcool.
Il diabete.
L’età avanzata (l’arteriosclerosi è più frequente negli uomini che nelle donne, almeno finchè esse non entrano in menopausa).
La scarsa attività fisica.
La pressione arteriosa elevata.

Si è verificato sperimentalmente che ognuno dei fattori scatenanti agisce indipendentemente uno dall’altro, e che la presenza di questi non fa che assommare ulteriormente il tapentadol disturbo.

Tra le cause scatenanti si è anche scoperto che lo stress è uno dei fattori di rischio che ha una notevole importanza.
