Il nome scientifico è Herpes zopter, in genere viene chiamato fuoco di Sant’Antonio, ma cos’è e come si cura? È un’infezione molto più diffusa di quanto si creda. I dati dicono che un italiano su quattro, nell’arco della vita, deve fare i conti con questa dolorosissima malattia parente della varicella. La colpevole infatti è questa malattia esentematica.F

Quando si guarisce, il virus della varicella non abbandona l’organismo ma si rifugia nei glangli nervosi della colonna vertebrale, dove rimane invisibile alle cellule del sistema immunitario. Qui può rimanere silenzioso per tutta la vita oppure riattivarsi.

I problemi nascono quando si abbassano troppo le difese immunitarie oppure a causa dello stress. Il virus Fuoco di Sant’Antonio si preannuncia accompagnato da un senso di debolezza, talvolta un po’ di frebbre. A far capire che si tratta di altro è la sensazione di formicolio doloroso, come se si venisse punzecchiati con degli spilli, in una delimitata zona della pelle. Dopo tre cinque giorni dai segni premonitori, si manifetano i sintomi tipici del Fuoco di Sant’Antonio e a questo punto non ci sono più dubbi. Il dolore è bruciante e aumenta man mano di intensità.

Poi compaiono chiazze rosse che hanno una forma simile a quella di un frustrata perchè seguono il decorso di uno o più fasci nervosi in base a dove il virus si è insediato e sono localizzate soltanto su un lato del corpo.

La cura del Fuoco di Sant’Antonio consiste in farmaci antivirali specifici. In genere si assumono per circa dieci giorni e non provoca effetti collaterali. Va seguita però scrupolosamente perchè solo così la malattia guarisce bene. Se poi i sintomi sono molto accentuati, talvolta il medico prescrive anche la vitamina B12 che aiuta a difendere i nervi dall’azione del virus.

Per evitare pericoli di contagio, anche se in casa ci sono solo adulti, è meglio evitare la condivisione di lenzuola e asciugamani e lavare tutto a parte. Questo per due o tre settimane, fino a quando le vescicole si seccano e cadono le crosticine.

Da poco più di un anno è disponibile anche in Italia il vaccino che dimezza il rischio di Fuoco di Sant’Antonio, prevede una sola dose per via sottocutanea, ma è consigliata solo altri unltracinquantenni particolarmente a rischio di malattia a causa di un sistema immunitario molto debilitato.
