Una nuova speranza si apre per i malati di Sclerosi Laterale Amiotrofica (Sla), dopo i primi test con le cellule staminali. Si passa dunque alla fase 2 per valutare la risposta al trattamento.
I primi risultati sono comunque positivi, e pubblicati su Stem Cells Translation Medicine. Si tratta di cinque anni di test eseguiti all’ospedale Maggiore della Carità di Novara e S. Maria di Terni, e dall’Università di Padova e Istituto Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza di San Giovanni Rotondo. Ad eseguirli Angelo Vescovi e Letizia Mazzini, dal 2010.
I test
I test sono il “primo esempio in Europa del trapianto chirurgico di un vero farmaco cellulare”, secondo la nota della Fondazione Revert, che continua a descrivere gli effetti come riproducibili per un metodo “altamente standardizzato e prodotto in regime farmaceutico di Good Clinical Practice, in grado pertanto di rispettare i criteri di sterilità e sicurezza imposte dagli enti di controllo Agenzia Italiana del Farmaco (Aifa) ed Agenzia Europea del farmaco (Ema)”.
Sono stati 18 i pazienti che si sono sottoposti ai test, naturalmente tutti malati di Sclerosi. I pazienti hanno subito vari trapianti di cellule. Dalle tre alle sei volte sono state impiantate le staminali nel midollo spinale lombare o cervicale, e nessuno a manifestato reazioni avverse. Per il momento si parla di “risultati incoraggianti” che portano alla seconda fase in cui il numero di pazienti su cui sperimentare i trapianti saranno venti.
