L’ascaridiosi è provocata da un verme, l’ascaris lumbricoides, particolarmente comune nelle zone umide e temperate. Un tempo era comune anche in Italia, mentre oggi è pressochè scomparso, mentre è ancora molto diffusa nei paesi tropicali non solo per il clima caldo, ma anche per le scarse condizioni igienico sanitarie.
L’infezione avviene attraverso l’ingestione accidentale delle uova del verme, presenti nelle feci e nel suolo, nell’acqua e negli alimenti contaminati. Una volta all’interno dell’organismo, le uova si schiudono lasciando fuoriuscire le larve che si diffondono nei polmoni e risalgono fino alla gola.

Qui vengono ingerite e raggiungono in questo modo l’intestino dove si sviluppano in vermi adulti, crescono diventando lunghi fino a 12 cm e si riproducono.

Le femmine depositano le uova che vengono evacuate con le feci riproducendo il ciclo, che mediamente si svolge nell’arco di 2-3 mesi.

Anche molti animali possono essere infettati dall’ascaris. Nei suini per esempio è presente una altra specie di ascaris che in qualche caso può contaminare l’uomo, quando si ingeriscono accidentalmente le uova infette.

Nella maggior parte delle persone non si manifestano sintomi, anche se l’infezione, nei bambini, può provocare un rallentamento della crescita e uno scarso aumento del peso corporeo.

Se l’infezione è molto elevata si possono avere dolori addominali anche intensi ed anche il blocco delle attività intestinali.

Durante il loro tragitto nei polmoni, le larve possono provocare sintomi come tosse e difficoltà respiratorie.
