È il sogno di tutti i fumatori: un vaccino per smettere di fumare. Il vaccino, al momento ancora sperimentale, esiste eccome: è il risultato di uno studio americano pubblicato sull’American Journal of Psychiatry.
Come agisce il vaccino?
In pratica agisce sui recettori e contrasta l’arrivo della nicotina al cervello contribuendo in modo concreto a ridurre il piacere provocato dalle sigarette ed eliminando la dipendenza all’origine.
Il vaccino è stato messo a punto da Nabi Biopharmaceutical e già sperimentato su undici persone presso la Yale School of Medicine di New York, negli Stati Uniti.
I soggetti dello studio erano fumatori accaniti che fumavano mediamente 19 sigarette al giorno da 10 anni: sono stati somministrate loro quattro iniezioni del vaccino e poi sono stati sottoposti a tomografia computerizzata a emissione di singoli fotoni prima e dopo il trattamento. Il vaccino ha ridotto del 12,5% il legame fra la nicotina e i recettori della sostanza e ha anche ridotto considerevolmente (del 23,6%) la quantità di nicotina disponibile ad entrare nel cervello.
COME NASCE IL DESIDERIO DI UNA SIGARETTA
Alla fine i fumatori avevano risotto del 40% il quantitativo di sigarette quotidiane e avevano anche riportato un calo significativo del desiderio di fumare.
Se i risultati del vaccino lasciano ben sperare, è anche vero che gli esperti mettono in allerta chi vede nel vaccino la soluzione definitiva per smettere di fumare.
In particolare è necessario valutare la reale efficacia, ma anche i rischi del vaccino: inoltre gli esperti fanno notare che la maggior parte delle volte il problema del tabagismo e la dipendenza dal fumo vengono legati anche ad aspetti di carattere psicologico della persona. Diventa pertanto azzardato pensare di poter intervenire concretamente sul problema senza affrontare anche il problema psicologico. Insomma gli esperti sono ancora scettici perché è vero che il vaccino può essere efficace, ma il vaccino più potente resta sempre la volontà di smettere di fumare.
