Quando si avverte secchezza delle fauci (bocca secca) o per usare un termine medico xerostomia, si ha effettivamente una diminzione della quantità e qualità di saliva all’interno del cavo orale. Può capitare, a causa di disidratazione, ma anche in seguito ad alcune patologie e all’assunzione di determinati farmaci. La cura di questo disturbo dipende ovviamente dalle cause scatenanti. Vediamo insieme quali sono le possibilità, tutti i rimedi, casalinghi, naturali e non per evitare le complicanze correlate.
Diagnosi
Per stabilire un’effettiva causa di secchezza delle fauci, quando questa tende a essere cronica e/o recidivante è importante da parte del medico curante o del dentista una analisi clinica del cavo orale, oltre che un’anamnesi precisa e la lista dei farmaci che si assumono. In taluni casi potrebbero essere necessari esami del sangue, scansioni di immagini delle ghiandole salivari o test che misurano la quantità di saliva. Se si sospetta che la bocca secca sia provocata dalla sindrome di Sjogren, è necessaria una biopsia delle cellule delle ghiandole salivari stesse.
Cure e farmaci contro la bocca secca
Il trattamento dipende dalla causa della bocca secca. Il medico o il dentista può:
- Cambiare i medicinali che causano secchezza delle fauci o modificarne le dosi.
- Consigliare prodotti per idratare la bocca. Questi possono includere risciacqui con colluttori che necessitano di prescrizione o meno, saliva artificiale o creme idratanti per lubrificare il cavo orale.
Se si dispone di una grave secchezza della bocca, il medico o il dentista può:
- Prescrivere farmaci che stimolano la salivazione come la pilocarpina (Salagen) o il cevimeline (Evoxac).
- Proteggete i denti. Prevenendo la carie ed usando settimanalmente colluttori alla clorexidina.
- Curare se possibile la patologia di base.
Rimedi casalinghi contro la secchezza delle fauci
Oltre ai consigli del proprio medico o dentista, alcuni piccoli accorgimenti possono aiutare ad alleviare i sintomi della bocca asciutta:
- Sorseggiare acqua o bevande senza zucchero o succhiare cubetti di ghiaccio per tutto il giorno per inumidire la bocca, e bere acqua durante i pasti per facilitare la masticazione e la deglutizione.
- Masticare gomme senza zucchero o succhiare caramelle dure senza zucchero. Tuttavia, in alcune persone, lo xilitolo, che si trova spesso nelle gomme da masticare o caramelle, può causare diarrea o crampi se consumato in grandi quantità. Da tenere presente.
- Utilizzare sostituti della saliva da banco (senza obbligo di prescrizione) che contengono carbossimetilcellulosa o idrossietilcellulosa, come Biotene Balance orale.
- Respirare attraverso il naso, non con la bocca. Potrebbe essere necessario cercare un trattamento per il russare che fa respirare attraverso la bocca aperta durante la notte.
- Aggiungere umidità all’aria nell’ambiente in cui si soggiorna dorme: con un umidificatore.
- Idratare le labbra per lenire zone secche o screpolate.
Importante è anche evitare i prodotti che possono peggiorare i sintomi. Questi includono:
- Caffeina e alcol. Questi prodotti possono provocare secchezza e irritazione. Non utilizzare collutorio contenente alcool.
- Tutto il tabacco.
- Antistaminici e decongestionanti.
- Alimenti e caramelle zuccherate o acidi. Essi aumentano il rischio di carie. Vanno evitati anche i cibi piccanti o salati perché possono causare irritazione.
Medicina alternativa contro la bocca secca
Diversi rimedi erboristici sono stati utilizzati storicamente per trattare la secchezza della bocca, come le tisane a base di marshmallow o olmo sdrucciolevole, ma non ci sono studi recenti che mostrano beneficio o danno nel loro utilizzo per la bocca asciutta.
L’elettroagopuntura, che prevede la stimolazione dei punti di agopuntura tradizionali sulla pelle utilizzando elettrodi anziché gli aghi tradizionali, sembra essere molto promettente in alcuni studi sul trattamento della secchezza delle fauci. Tuttavia, i ricercatori stanno ancora lavorando per determinare se questa terapia è veramente migliore di altre.
