Si chiama diabulimia e rischia di diventare un disturbo alimentare diffuso quasi quanto l’anoressia e la bulimia. La diabulimia un pericoloso disturbo dell’alimentazione che colpisce le donne diabetiche, soprattutto di giovane età e a lanciare l’allarme sono i medici del Regno Unito, dove sembra che il problema stia cominciando ad acquisire proporzioni preoccupanti.
Le donne affette da diabulimia in pratica rinunciano alle iniezioni quotidiane e necessarie di insulina pur di perdere perso. Le persone affette da diabete di tipo 1 sono tenute a iniettarsi quotidianamente l’insulina che non viene regolarmente prodotta dal pancreas, ma le punture come effetto collaterale possono causare un aumento di peso.
A rinunciare (o ad alterare le quantità prescritte di insulina) alle iniezioni preziose e indispensabili per la salute, sono soprattutto giovani donne di età compresa fra i 15 e i 30 anni (l’età più a rischio per i disturbi alimentari), disposte a tutto pur di mantenere il proprio peso. Uno dei sintomi del diabete 1 non diagnosticato infatti è proprio la perdita di peso: quando si comincia la cura con l’insulina il rischio più probabile è d’ingrassare, eventualità che le donne non sono disposte ad accettare.
TRE MILIONI DI ITALIANI DIABETICI
Per adesso il problema sembra essere diffuso soprattutto in Inghilterra al punto tale che l’associazione Diabetici con disturbi alimentari sta sta tentando di far ottenere il riconoscimento ufficiale della diabulimia come un problema di salute mentale, equiparandolo di fatto all’anoressia e alla bulimia. Secondo gli esperti italiani il problema potrebbe approdare e diffondersi su larga scala anche in Italia
