La celiachia è una malattia autoimmune che non sempre è facile riconoscere: potrebbe infatti presentarsi attraverso una sintomatologia silente o atipica.
E allora come capire se effettivamente si soffre d’intolleranza al glutine? In pratica è necessario seguire una dieta priva di glutine associata a una biopsia che sia in grado di verificare l’eventuale presenza di danni all’intestino tenue, dato che la malattia causa un’infiammazione cronica.
Ma esisterebbe anche un altro approccio diagnostico per verificare se si è affetti da celiachia. Uno studio pubblicato su BMC Medicine e condotto da un gruppo di ricercatori australiani suggerisce che per identificare la presenza della celiachia sarebbe sufficiente combinare la misurazione degli anticorpi e la presenza di rischio dei fattori genetici.
Attraverso il test degli anticorpi è possibile ottenere una reale risposta immunitaria al glutine, ma combinato insieme a un semplice test genetico è possibile ottenere una risposta concreta e affidabile. Secondo Jason Tye-Din, uno degli autori della ricerca, le biopsie intestinali sono indicate a chi risulti positivo ai test degli anticorpi che però spesso possono essere dei falsi positivi. In questo è il test genetico a fare la differenza indicando se effettivamente sia necessario effettuare una biopsia intestinale.
Secondo i dati diffusi dai ricercatori, il nuovo approccio diagnostico sta dando ottimi risultati in Australia consentendo di identificare con certezza gli individui affetti da celiachia. Secondo gli autori dello studio infatti la diagnosi tempestiva e affidabile della celiachia resta un traguardo molto importante per tutelare la salute dei pazienti: iniziare una dieta senza glutine basandosi solo su un test del sangue può non essere sufficiente anche considerando il fatto che la biopsia è una procedura costosa e invasiva che andrebbe evitata quando possibile.
E se il nuovo studio ha suggerito una nuova, corretta diagnosi della celiachia, meno invasiva e meno costosa, l’Istituto Pediatrico Gaslini in collaborazione con l’Università di Verona, ha di recente messo a punto un semplicissimo test del sangue per effettuare la diagnosi precoce della celiachia.
